Frequently asked questions
Does cropping lower the quality of my image?
The crop is cut from the full-resolution original, not from the smaller preview you see on screen, so no detail is lost unless you choose a social preset (which scales to the platform's exact size) or a lossy format. PNG is lossless; JPEG and WebP trade quality for size, which the Quality slider controls.
What do the social media presets do?
Each preset locks the crop box to that platform's ratio and exports the result at its exact size, for example 1080×1080 for an Instagram post or 1280×720 for a YouTube thumbnail. A small crop is scaled up to that size, so start from a large enough area if sharpness matters. The swap button flips the preset between portrait and landscape.
Why can't I crop my iPhone HEIC photo?
The tool can only open what your browser can decode. Safari 17 and later opens HEIC; Chrome and Firefox have no HEIC decoder, so those files show an error instead of a blank image. Convert the photo to JPEG first, or open it in Safari. Photos from a phone that are already JPEG keep the orientation they were taken in.
What happens to animated GIFs and transparency?
An animated GIF is cropped from its first frame only, because the canvas holds a single picture. Transparency is kept for PNG and WebP; JPEG has no transparency, so transparent areas are filled with white instead of turning black.
