Frequently asked questions
Is my image uploaded anywhere?
No. The image is decoded and drawn onto a canvas in your browser, and every pixel is read from that canvas locally. Nothing is sent to a server, which is also why there is no "paste an image URL" box: loading a picture from another site would taint the canvas and the browser would refuse to let any page read its pixels.
Why does the picked colour differ slightly from what I see in my photo editor?
Browsers convert images with an embedded colour profile (Display P3, Adobe RGB) to sRGB before drawing, so the values here are what a web page would actually render. Editors that show the raw profile values can differ by a few units. The CMYK figure is a plain mathematical conversion with no printer profile, so treat it as approximate.
How do I pick a colour with the keyboard or on a phone?
Tab to the image, move the picker with the arrow keys (hold Shift to move 10 pixels at a time) and press Enter to pick. On a touch screen, press on the image and the magnifier appears above your finger; drag to fine-tune and lift to pick. Where your browser has the EyeDropper API, a button also lets you pick a colour from anywhere on your screen.
How is the dominant palette calculated, and can I get a full palette tool?
The image is shrunk to at most 100 by 100 pixels and a k-means clustering groups similar colours, giving the same result every time for the same image. To keep editing, locking and exporting the colours (Tailwind, JSON, colour-blind preview), use the Color Palette Generator at /color/color-palette-generator.
