How is the tip amount calculated?
Tip amount is the bill total multiplied by the tip percentage divided by 100. The total is the bill plus that tip amount.
What is a standard tip percentage?
In the US, 15-20% is typical for restaurant service, with 18-20% common for good service. Use the preset buttons for quick access to 10%, 15%, 18%, and 20%, or enter any custom percentage.
How does bill splitting work?
Set the number of people and the calculator divides the total (bill plus tip) evenly across everyone, showing the amount each person owes.
Can I use a custom tip percentage instead of the presets?
Yes. Enter any percentage in the custom tip field and the results update immediately, no need to pick one of the preset buttons.
Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?
Open "Advanced options" to add a tax percentage and choose whether the tip is calculated on the pre-tax or post-tax subtotal. Tipping on the post-tax amount gives a slightly larger tip.
Can I round the total or split unevenly?
Advanced options let you round the total or per-person amount up, down, or to the nearest 0.25, 1, or 5, and switch to an uneven split so each person pays a different share instead of an equal amount.
