Frequently asked questions

What happens if I enter a time that daylight saving skipped over?

On a spring-forward date an hour of the clock never happens — in New York, 2:30 AM on the changeover date does not exist. The converter shifts such a time forward by the size of the gap, so 2:30 AM becomes the instant the clocks actually reached, 3:30 AM daylight time.

And a time that happens twice when the clocks go back?

On a fall-back date one hour repeats, so 1:30 AM occurs once on daylight time and again an hour later on standard time. The converter always takes the first occurrence — the earlier, still-daylight one.

Where does the time zone data come from?

From the IANA time zone database that ships with your browser, read through the built-in Intl API. Nothing is downloaded and no request leaves the page, so the offsets and daylight saving rules are exactly as current as your browser and operating system are.

Why does a row show "+1 day" or "−1 day"?

It marks a zone whose calendar date differs from the source date you entered. 11:30 PM in Los Angeles is already the next afternoon in Tokyo, so the Tokyo row is flagged "+1 day" to stop the time being read against the wrong date.

Are my chosen zones saved?

Your target zone list and the 12-hour/24-hour choice are stored in your browser's local storage on this device only. Clearing site data resets them to the defaults.
